Our history

At Sanofi, we consider ourselves to be a forward-thinking company. However there are times when it's good to reflect. Our heritage is something we're particularly proud of and we celebrate our achievements and our past, which have helped to mould and shape our future.

Founded in 1973 we've never stood still

Founded in 1973 we've never stood still. Our journey has been one of innovation, daring and spotting opportunities to further our progression. Not long after we formed, we looked to gain presence in the UK by acquiring half the UK joint venture Reckitt Labaz - part of the Labaz Group.

Immediately we started establishing ourselves, by ensuring we had the right premises to maximise our production, which started with a purpose-built factory in Newcastle.

Sanofi UK came about when Reckitt's share in the UK joint venture was bought out. And a few years later we completed our Head Office in Guildford, cementing our commitment to the UK.

From there we went from strength to strength, using the next decade to refine our business model and gain skilled employees to continue our growth and deliver our vision.

In August 2004, Sanofi-Synthelabo acquired Aventis. The takeover was finalized on December 31 of that year, giving birth to sanofi-aventis.

In 2009 Sanofi-aventis completes the acquisition of Merck's 50% interest in Merial, a world-leading animal health business.

April 8, 2011 - Sanofi Announces completion of its acquisition of Genzyme Corporation, which is now a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sanofi.  Genzyme is One of the world's leading biotechnology companies.

On May 6, 2011, sanofi-aventis simplified its name to Sanofi.

But we believe this is only the start. Our sights are firmly set on the future and what we can achieve in the years to come. A future we hope you'll be part of.
